MOWING

Proper mowing increases the density of the lawn, which in turn decreases weeds. Each type of grass has a recommended mowing height. Find out which type of grass is in your lawn (you may have more than one) and mow at the proper height.

Stick to the 1/3 rule — never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade length at any one time. A healthy lawn can survive an occasional close cut. Repeated close mowing produces a brown lawn and has several harmful side effects.


Newly-seeded grass needs three to four weeks to get established after germination before you should mow it for the first time. The grass blades are tender and easily damaged and the foot and mower traffic could compact the soil, especially if the soil is moist. Mow when the new grass is 3/4 inch to 1 inch taller than its recommended regular mowing height.

LAWN DETHACHING

CORE AERATION

Core aeration is performed with a machine that pulls 3 inch cores of soil about a nickel in diameter out of the lawn. It is one of the most effective procedures a golf course will use to make sure the lawn stays full and lush year round.

 

Aerating your lawn allows a number of benefits including, better seed germination, air circulation, and water absorption. It also simulates micro organizums that will help keep thatch in control, and helps to decompact your lawn. It is cost effective and a 100% enviormentally friendly.

 

The best time to over-seed and fertilize your lawn is right after an aeration treatment. It is highly recommended to aerate your lawn at least once a year, and twice a year for high traffic areas.

Dethatching is a restorative service only recommend for lawns that suffer from an extremely thick thatch layer. Since dethatching causes extensive damage and is extremely labor intensive, this service will only be performed on lawns with with a thatch layer more than 3 inches thick.

After a lawn is dethatched, a large amount of plant material is ripped up from the lawn; several pickup trucks of dead thatch can be created from an average sized lawn. The lawn will suffer extensive damage as well, because the knives will not only rip out the thatch, but also rip out a large percentage of the healthy grass plants. The growing points of a grass plant are at the base of the plant, and a lot of the growing points are damaged when a lawn is dethatched.

Since dethatching causes a lot of damage, it creates a lawn that is thin, brown, and beat up. Because of this, we strongly recommend combining our Dethatching service with overseeding, as well as an application of top dressing.

 

Overseeding ensures that new grass plants quickly fill in any damaged areas of the lawn. If overseeding is not done, weed seeds can establish themselves in damaged areas of the lawn. Topdressing helps the new grass seed establish itself fast, and stimulates the existing grass plants to recover from dethatching.

 

Dethatching is best done in late Summer or early Fall. This allows the lawn plenty of time to recover before Winter, but also avoids the rigours of Summer drought and heat. By waiting until late Summer, there'll also be less competition with a variety of weeds that germinate in Spring.

POWER RAKING

Power Raking is a gentle way to remove a small amount of thatch from the lawn, without causing the significant damage that dethaching can cause. Its also a great way to remove dead debris and crust that builds up on a lawn over Winter.
 

Power Raking generally involves using fixed knife type blades that slice the thatch instead of ripping it out. Using a dethatching machine, it is set to high so that the blades just skim the surface. Unlike dethatching, Power Raking doesn't cause extensive damage, so the lawn recovers rapidly and maintains its density.

Power Raking can be done in Spring or Fall. If you're looking to remove Winter debris, it is recommended to do it before the lawn starts growing to avoid setting the lawn back during critical Spring time growth.

We recommend Power Raking in early Spring, before new growth has begun. The service is especially effective combined with overseeding, as it opens the lawn surface so that new seed can get better established. It's also a great way to thicken up bentgrass lawns, since Power Raking slices the surface stolons and stimulates new growth, thickening the lawn.

OVER-SEEDING/TOPDRESSING

For lawns that are thin, weak, and have minor areas of concern, overseeding works wonders. New grass seed assists in thickening up these areas before they continue to worsen and problems arise, and continually adding new grass seed replaces older, tired grass to keep it healthy and robust.

 

Spring and Fall are usually the best times to plant grass seed, since soil and air temperatures are warm and natural rainfall is usually common. These beneficial growing conditions help ensure optimal seed germination and make establishment much more successful.

The most important rule to follow when establishing new grass seed is this: “if the seed dries, it dies.”  Water is essential, and without it the seed cannot germinate. Maintaining a light frequent watering schedule multiple times a day until the grass fully establishes is vital to ensure the seed stays moist and doesn’t dry out.

Depending on the grass species, it can take weeks or months to fully establish new seedlings. Special aftercare and mowing practices are required during establishment, since new seedlings are tender and can be easily damaged if mowing frequency and mowing height are not adjusted. It's recommended to wait 4 – 6 weeks after full germination until regular mowing practices are adopted.

Combining a core aeration service with overseeding is an excellent way to achieve optimal performance by maximizing the benefits both services have to offer at once.Overseeding is recommended annually for every lawn, even the best conditioned.

A tree stump can be disposed of in one of two ways – removal or grinding. Depending on the size of a tree, the extent of its root system and other considerations, you may choose either of those options to remove an unsightly stump from your property. Precision Cutting Services has the equipment and expertise to remove or grind stumps for trees of any size.

Stump removal involves cutting off the root system, then digging the bulk of the stump out and lifting it away with a crane.

Removal can be difficult or impossible with large and old trees, which have root systems that are just too hard to take out. Stump grinding lets you avoid having to dig – after cutting off all the parts of the tree that we can remove by conventional means, we then use a machine to grind and shred the stump into mulch and chips. Afterwards, the stump gets covered by soil or fertilizer, and that’s the last you will see of it. The chips that result from the grinding operation can be used as mulch or decoration for the rest of your yard.

Stump removal isn’t always the result of a planned tree-cutting operation – for example, when a tree falls on its own as a result of age or bad weather, all or part of the root system can get wrenched out of the ground, in which case it needs to be disposed of along with the rest of the tree. In such a situation, nature has already done much of the work; fallen tree removals involve some of the more straightforward stump removal jobs, as long as they are handled with care (cutting the tree trunk without securing the root system may cause the latter to suddenly tip back into the ground hole, complicating the removal or even causing harm to equipment or people).
